In Darkness

From the March issue of Clash.

Poland, 1943. Relentlessly hunted by the Nazis, the remaining Jewish population of Lvov have taken to the sewers in their desperate
battle for survival. Sewage worker Leopold Socha can make a small fortune by handing them in, but instead agrees to keep them hidden for a fee, little knowing how this simple transaction will escalate.

Agnieszka Holland depicts a living hell of blackened claustrophobia in which any moment of positive existence – a child’s song, for example – is something to be cherished when basic human dignity is often unobtainable.

A fascinating but seemingly little known story, In Darkness is worthy of its recent Oscar nomination.
